To visualize this, think of the Mail app on an iPad, where you see the inbox on the left and the mail list on the right. In phones or devices with small screens, you would simply swap the Fragment when the user selected an article, but on tablets, the same activity would host both at the same time. Now, instead of having two different Activities, you can have one that will display two Fragments - one for the list of articles and one that is capable of showing the selected article fullscreen. Since you can only have one activity visible at a time (by design), the Android team invented the concept of Fragments, where a hosting Activity can display more than one Fragment at the same time. This worked well, until tablets with big screens came. When the user selects one, the article opens in fullscreen.īefore Fragments, you would have had to create two activities (one for the list, and one for the fullscreen article) and switch between them. On a phone with a small screen, you only see the list of articles. Perhaps the closest thing would be the Application class in Android, but there are a lot architecture differences between them.Īs screens in devices grew bigger, the Android team added the concept of Fragments.Ģ The typical example is the News Reader app. Don't go around looking for an Android equivalent of an ApplicationDelegate there is none. The closest thing to an Activity in iOS would be a UIViewController. ![]() That's because the most common case for an Intent is to start an Activity.ġ Activities and Fragments, What are You Talking About? Intents are used everywhere, no matter how simple your app is even your Hello World app will use an Intent. ![]() This sounds interesting, but there's more than meets the eye. In truth, an Intent is an abstract description of an operation to be performed. The English dictionary defines an Intent as:Īccording to the official Android documentation, an Intent is a messaging object you can use to request an action from another app component. In Android, you would likely find Path in the chooser dialog. Let's say you have a picture in Instagram and you want to share it to Path (I know, not a lot of people use Path, but still…). Instagram is an easy and popular one, just like Facebook or Twitter, but there are dozens of other not-so-supported apps out there. The biggest difference is that if the app is not supported, you just can't do it directly. Notice that if iOS apps support sharing between them, the flow is similar. If it doesn't, remove EditPhoto app and get a decent photo editor or use the built-in editor, which has gotten really good in KitKat. If EditPhoto supports sharing (I haven't seen a photo editing app that doesn't), tap it and select Instagram. Pick your EditPhoto app and make your edits. ![]() Swipe Right to see the 'Gallery,' and click the Share button. Import the recently saved photo, and then share it on Instagram with your hipster friends. Go to the Home Screen again, find Instagram, launch it… Otherwise, you will have to Save the image in the Photo Library. If EditPhoto supports sharing and Instagram is on the list, you're good to go! Go to the Home Screen, find your EditPhoto app, launch it, open existing photo, find it in the Camera Roll, make your edits. Please note: this is just a example to illustrate a point. Imagine the following scenario: you take a picture and want to retouch it with some image editing app, and later share it on Instagram. There are other simple examples where it really becomes clear how different both platforms behave. Android, on the other hand, was designed to support this behavior since day one. It was not until Apple added the ability in iOS 6 that this was really possible. Back in the days of iOS 1.0, it quickly became obvious that applications couldn't really talk to each other (at least non-Apple applications), even after the first iOS SDK was released.īefore iOS 6, attaching a photo or a video to an email you were already composing was definitely a chore. If you’re having trouble controlling your pen, you can always change your tool or try a pen grip-one of those small rubber tubes that slip right onto your pen or pencil for better control. Once you have a comfortable grip, check it every few minutes and correct it if you need to. On top of that, pain will also affect the consistency of your handwriting and eventually deter you from putting pen to paper at all, rendering this whole process useless. This is important because an excessively strong grip will lead to pain and discomfort, which can result in hand and wrist cramping, as well as injury. If your nails are white from the force you’re exerting, your grip is too strong-relax your hand and try again. When you write, do it at a normal pace (not too fast, not too slow) and mind your hold on the pen. It can be anything: a story, your train of thought, or the transcription of a song you like. Start by filling between a half and a whole page with fresh handwriting. You’ve got your tools and your setup-it’s time to write. Pilot’s Kakuno or Schneider’s Ray fountain pens are solid, inexpensive choices-they’re light and comfortable, and can prepare you to move on to more serious fountain pens in the future. This will prevent you from having to buy a bottle of ink and a refillable cartridge, unless you’d really like to. If you want to try your hand at fountain pens, start with something designed for beginners that-hopefully-is compatible with disposable ink cartridges, or even comes pre-loaded with ink. These are all inexpensive writing tools with their own fan bases, so you should be able to find something that works among them. Some more ideas: Uniball’s Signo, Pentel’s RSVP, Sakura’s Pigma Micron, or any gel pen at Muji. ![]() You’ve probably written with these a million times before, and they’re a staple because of how comfortable and reliable they are. If you want to go with a classic, try BIC’s Cristal or Round Stic pens. It comes in several formats, but the tried-and-tested version has a built-in grip, is retractable, uses quick-drying gel ink, and comes in myriad colors. Many people swear by the Pilot G-2, for example. If you have no idea where to start, you can always give some fan favorites a test drive. Maybe buy two or three to keep testing at home. If you can, go to a stationery store and take your time sampling the pens there-write a couple words on the provided pads and see how each pen feels. The best way to know if a pen is right for you is to try it. Righties don’t have to think about anything-the world is built for you. Gel pens and ballpoint pens are usually quick-drying, so starting there is a good idea. If you’re a leftie, stay away from broad-nibbed fountain pens that might dispense a lot of ink with each stroke-you’ll likely end up with smudged words all over your page as your hand crosses your freshly printed letters. ![]() Now, to the fun part: get a pen you like. You’ll find this will not only help you improve your handwriting but it will also be relaxing. ![]() Take as much time as you need to ensure your setup is to your liking. This is why having a spacious surface to write on matters, as you won’t want to knock down any desk trinkets while you play around with your paper. The best way to find out what angle works for you is to start with your paper laid vertically and then rotate it to the left (if you’re right-handed) or the right (if you’re left-handed) until you’re comfortable. There’s absolutely no shame in positioning your sheet of paper or notebook at a 45-degree angle or even a totally horizontal alignment. Don’t fall for the notion that the only correct setup is vertical, as that can force your hand and wrist to adopt an unnatural writing position, which could lead to pain and even injury. Next, find a paper layout angle that suits your writing. If you’re using loose paper instead of a notebook, you can buy lined, gridded, or dotted paper-or you can download and print your own from one of several free online resources. This will help you gauge the direction of your script and the size and consistency of your letters, so we strongly recommend forgoing blank pages until you’re more comfortable with your new and improved penmanship. Speaking of lines, you should use some kind of guideline at this stage-it could be lines, a grid, or dots, whatever your handwriting-focused heart desires. ![]() ![]() ![]() Scalene Right TriangleĪ scalene right triangle is a triangle where one angle is 90° and the other two angles are of different measurements. So in an isosceles right triangle, the angles are always 90º-45º- 45º. Hence, the base angles add up to 90º which implies that they are 45º each. We know that the sum of the angles of a triangle is 180º. Since two sides are equal, the triangle is also an isosceles triangle. Observe the triangle ABC given below in which angle A = 90º, and we can see that AB = AC. Isosceles Right TriangleĪn isosceles right triangle is called a 90º-45º- 45º triangle. A triangle in which one angle is 90º and the other two angles are equal is referred to as an isosceles right triangle, and the triangle in which the other two angles have different values is called a scalene right triangle. There are a few special right triangles such as the isosceles right triangles and the scalene right triangles. This implies that the other two angles in the triangle will be acute angles. We have learned that one of the angles in a right triangle is 90º. Some of the examples of right triangles in our daily life are the triangular slice of bread, a square piece of paper folder across the diagonal, or the 30-60-90 triangular scale in a geometry box.
![]() ![]() ![]() So before we get to our third installment of the Beyond the Map series, we sat down with product director Ethan Russell to get answers to a few frequently asked questions about our maps data and how you can help us keep it up to date for your very own applications and experiences. Are you more or less likely to use Apple Maps these days? Let us know in the comments. With more than a billion people using Google Maps every month and more than 5 million active apps and websites using Google Maps Platform core products every week, we get questions about where our maps data come from, how we keep it accurate, and more. "Maps has come a long way, and people have noticed," Craig Federighi, Apple's head of software, said at WWDC 2023. Likely thanks to its disastrous launch, Apple Maps still gets a bad rap among some users, but Apple's continued efforts to improve the app appear to have helped reverse some of those opinions. Based on anecdotal reports, the app is increasingly recommended by users for its cleaner view versus the more cluttered design of Google Maps. For electric vehicle owners, Google Maps also offers information on charging stations, including compatibility details, charger speed, and the last usage time.ĭespite these concurrent improvements to Google Maps, their combined effect hasn't stopped users coming away impressed by how far Apple's navigational guidance has come. These include more detailed and realistic representations of buildings and improved lane guidance on highways. Google Maps has also rolled out updates to make navigation maps more reflective of real-world conditions. The feature has since been expanded to over 50 cities. Leveraging AI and augmented reality, Lens in Maps helps users get their bearings in a new location by providing information about nearby amenities like ATMs, transit stations, and dining options. It also includes a dynamic time slider indicating how conditions such as air quality and weather change throughout the day, helping users plan their trips with more precision.Īnother significant improvement is the integration of Lens in Maps, an evolution of the Search with Live View feature. Launched last year, the tool combines billions of Street View and aerial images to create an intricate digital representation of the world, allowing users to visually navigate through bike lanes, sidewalks, intersections, and parking spaces along their route. One notable recent update in this regard is the Immersive View for Routes, which provides a comprehensive preview of a user's journey, whether they are driving, walking, or cycling. Google has introduced several enhancements aimed at enriching the user experience through advanced AI technology and more immersive visualization tools, and has even taken a leaf or two out of Apple's book. Have Apple's incremental improvements been enough for it to be considered an equal to Google Maps in users' eyes? Of course, Google developers have not stood idly by watching Apple Maps' gradual evolution. And in iOS 17, Apple made it possible to download maps for offline use – something Google Maps users have been able to do for quite some time. In iOS 15, Apple introduced immersive walking directions shown in augmented reality, curated guides for select cities, real-time transit updates, and more road details for enhanced driving navigation. A Look Around feature in select cities is similar to Google's Street View, and the updated maps have been rolling out to more countries in the time since. ![]() In early 2020, Apple completed an overhaul of its maps in the United States, adding significantly greater detail including updated buildings, parks, sports fields, pools, and more. In 2015, Maps was updated with "Nearby," a feature that offers up local points of interest and transit directions in a handful of cities. Real-time traffic information and navigation options for pedestrians were added to Maps in 2013, which is also the same year Maps was extended to OS X. Since then, Apple has made significant improvements to Apple Maps, building in new features and correcting lingering errors. Apple CEO Tim Cook offered a rare public apology for the frustration it caused customers, and iOS chief Scott Forstall was ousted just one month later. Launched in September 2012, Apple Maps was quickly criticized for having incomplete and inaccurate mapping data, which led some iPhone users on dangerous routes. Which do you prefer to get you from A to B? still have Google Maps downloaded as an alternative to Apple Maps, which comes preinstalled on all iPhones. However, according to data from Canalys, the overwhelming majority of iPhones in the U.S. Apple Maps has been providing navigational guidance to Apple users for almost 13 and a half years now, and much has changed about the app in that time. ![]() ![]() Every employee needs to use sick days or take a break throughout the year.
